Cathedral v. Kilbourne -- 4/14/2019
Worthington Kilbourne surrendered a two goal, 4th quarter lead and ultimately lost to Cathedral (IN) 6-5 in OT. The Cathedral Irish are a perennial powerhouse in Indiana and traveled to WKHS for a featured, non-conference match-up. The loss drops Kilbourne to 7-2 overall on the season.
The Wolves will remember this as a game they let get away. Kilbourne seemed in control of the game in the second half, albeit a low scoring affair. Kilbourne bested Cathedral 2-0 in the 3rd quarter and then added a quick goal at the start of the 4th quarter to claim a 5-3 lead. However, the Wolves would never score again.
The tide started to turn after the Wolves rang a pipe on a shot and the ball traveled quickly to the other end of the field. The Irish capitalized on the opportunity and scored to trim the lead to just one goal. The play felt like a 2 goal swing.
Cathedral tied the game very late in the 4th quarter off an unsettled situation, picking up a ground ball in the slot and getting a quick shot off. Kilbourne kept its foot on the gas and ended regulation time with a flurry of offensive opportunities-- including a top corner pipe that some thought actually went in followed by a last second save for Cathedral that sent the game in OT.
In OT, Kilbourne never got a possession. Cathedral won the faceoff and maintained the ball for several minutes. The Wolves got the ball on the ground twice and Kilbourne coaches were very upset with what appeared to be a missed playing without a stick call. Kilbourne checked a stick out of an Irish attacker's grasp but he played the resulting ground ball and Cathedral got the ball. Shortly thereafter Cathedral netted the winner on a nice shot after getting to the center of the field.
The Wolves play back-to-back and will play tomorrow (Monday 4/15) hosting Delaware Hayes. JV is at 5:30 and Varsity at 7:00pm.
