The Worthington Kilbourne Wolves held off the Bishop Watterson Eagles' furious 4th quarter comeback to win 10-9 in the 2019 season opener in front of a strong crowd and atmosphere.
Kilbourne led the game 4-3 at halftime in a back and forth first half that featured the expected highlights, mistakes, and penalties by both teams for an opening day game.
In the 3rd quarter, Kilbourne settled down and played a strong period by holding Watterson scoreless, while at the same time netting 5 goals for the Wolves. Kilbourne stretched the lead to 9-3 by the end of the 3rd quarter and looked to be in control.
However, Watterson started the 4th quarter with a bang with two quick goals and took all the momentum back. Watterson scored a total of six goals in the final quarter to close the gap to trail by one. After Kilbourne lost possession with 0:11 seconds left, Watterson had one final chance. Watterson's pass near the crease was picked off by Kilbourne Goalie Dane Jackson to secure the win and run out the clock.
Worthington Kilbourne moves to 1-0 on the season. The Wolves now start a 3 game road trip against Olentangy Braves Tuesday March 19th followed by road games at Olentangy Liberty and Upper Arlington.
